Detroit Mar Thoma Church Choir Report 2008

 

"I will Sing unto the Lord God; I will sing praise to the Lord God of Israel."       -          Judges 5:3

 2008 was yet another blessed year for the Detroit Mar Thoma church choir and we thank God Almighty for enabling us to praise and worship him through music. Music is a strong medium in worship and an effective channel in christian missionary work. Both the English and Malayalam choirs led the congregation by singing melodious songs and assisted the worship services each and every sunday. The choirs also assisted during passion week services, parish conventions, choir Sunday, wedding service, funeral service, and christmas carol service.

 

 Choir Committee 2008:

The following members were elected as office bearers for the year 2008:

1.      Malayalam choir leader-Mr. Shaji Eapen.

2.      English choir leader-Mr. Shawn Thomas.

3.      Secretary-Mrs. Sansu Mathai.

4.      Treasurer-Mrs. Suja George.

5.      Committee members.

a.       Mr. Shane Thomas.

b.      Mr. Edwin David.

c.       Mrs. Laly Philips.

d.      Mrs. Jessy Philip.

6.      Auditor-Mrs. Shirly Thomas.

 

New members:

Six new members joined the choir after completing the voice test conducted on

June 1st 2008 and attended a special dedication service on June 8th 2008.

 

Choir Sunday:

Choir sunday was observed on June 8th 2008. Choir members were rededicated during this service. Both choirs participated and led choir sunday worship service and presented special songs.

 

Choir festival:

Our Malayalam choir participated in the xvii Mar Thoma regional choir festival hosted by St. Thomas Mar Thoma church of Chicago on August 2nd 2008 and gave an outstanding performance.

 

Choir get-together:

The choir get-together was held on october 11th 2008. this was a time of fellowship and fun for all who attended. Rev. M.P. Yohannan gave the devotional talk. The highlights were the variety of entertainment programs, music and bible quiz, special singing sessions and lunch.

 

Ecumenical Christmas program:

Our Malayalam choir conveyed a sense of joy of the christmas season by singing two Malayalam carols during the Detroit Ecumenical christmas program held at Detroit Mar Thoma church parish hall on December 25th 2008.

  

Accompaniment:

Mr. Shaji Eapen, Mr. Shane Thomas, Mr. Alan Thomas, Mr. Shine Eapen, Mr. Abhilash Thomas, Mr. Jason Abraham and Miss Divya Mathai helped the church choirs during the worship services and on special occasions by providing instrumental music to the choirs this year.

 

Conclusion:

We are greatful to God Almighty for his mercies in the past year. We thank all the families of the Detroit Mar Thoma church for their continued support and encouragement. Special thanks to our

choir members Mr. Alan Thomas, Mr. George Thomas, Mr. Alan John and Mr. Abin Thomas for preparing and projecting songs for sunday services. We thank all the choir members for their dedication throughout this year and our vicar Rev. Shaji K. Thomas for his leadership.
